The water town, Wuzhen, near Shanghai dates back around one thousand years and in recent times has been developed into a tourist destination and zone of preservation and celebration of traditional handcrafts by a former mayor who is now Buro Happold’s client for an Eden project style development near the Great Wall in Beijing.

It offers an alternative approach to the usual bulldozer/tower block/shopping mall development style that is generally preferred by developers especially in Hong Kong. It does require support though as it is not necessarily as economically viable as purely commercial construction but how great would it be to preserve some authentic Chinese history rather than supplant the past with a mock pseudo-European carpet of self imposed cultural “progress”!

  1. I’ve looked at your pictures and especially like the night-time bridge. I’ve looked at the Bead Shop site which looks promising but I’m not sure what size beads or what colours. Maybe you would look and let me know if you have any preferences Joy

  2. Hi. I’m writing about macrame rather than Wuzhen! I am sending two plant pot holders for you to consider – they are rather primitive but I thought it would be useful to send them for comment rather than make ones which weren’t what you wanted. I have lots of beads, all in brown or black or neutral. There’s plenty of natural string available but coloured yarn is more difficult to come by.

I thought you could also get some idea of how long it takes to arrive – I am posting it today (1 March) and I should like to know if they arrive in good condition and the packaging is adequate.

Have a nice week-end. The weather here is dry (it hasn’t rained for 2 weeks) but cold.

    Love Joy
